A new JRC Technical Report is out!
Oriented analysis to enable prioritization of Invasive Alien Species (EU Regulation 1143/2014) (Czechowska, K. et al. 2022) focuses on Horizon Scanning to identify and prioritise high-risk alien species.
As the rate of invasive alien species (IAS) introductions is increasing worldwide, it is essential to identify those species likely to arrive in the future, to reduce or prevent new biological invasions and their impacts. Horizon scanning (HS) is an essential tool supporting the implementation of the EU Regulation 1143/2014 on IAS (IAS Regulation). By identifying potential IAS approaching the EU Member States (MS) in future, HS studies are invaluable in assessing and mitigating future biological invasions and risks, allowing MS to prevent or early detect and eradicate the new IAS, essential for the successful IAS management.
This report was conceived to provide a methodological approach to prioritise future IAS threats in the EU, combining information from the most recent HS studies in a timely manner, to support the implementation of the IAS Regulation by MS. The methodology highlights new horizon IAS species, updates the existing IAS information provided through EASIN and proposes horizon IAS of high priority for risk assessments that inform prospective Union concern lists.
