When the native “carries” the alien

The international pet trade has facilitated the movement of organisms around the world. Escapes and releases from the aquarium trade are an important pathway for non-native (alien) freshwater species in Europe.

The discovery of the invasive zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, in Germany, transported alongside a commonly traded garden pond snail, Viviparus viviparous, a European native species, has been documented in a recent article.

This highlights the need for stricter biosecurity measures enforcement byvendors and to increase customers’ awareness, encouraging them to preventthe introduction and further spread of invasive species through the pet trade.
