So far, among marine alien seagrasses in the Mediterranean Sea, only Halophila stipulacea was known (a Lessepsian immigrant introduced in late 19th century). After more than a century, a second marine alien seagrass species has been found in the Mediterranean Sea. The tropical seagrass species Halophila decipiens has been found in the Saronikos Gulf, Aegean Sea, Greece, in 2018. The species is forming multiple mono-specific stands on a sandy bottom, at depths between 3 and 4 m.
