The 33rd SIL Congress in Turin: Science for sustainable freshwater
The Congress of the International Society of Limnology (SIL), was held in Turin (Italy) from 31st of July until the 5th of August (http://www.sil2016.it/) , and gathered hundreds of scientists worldwide, whose expertise covered a broad range of topics on freshwater protection.

There is a general consensus and awareness amongst scientists on the need to preserve freshwater ecosystems, since many are deteriorating in quantity and quality: scientific shared knowledge and international collaboration on limnology can contribute to their sustainable use.
The European Alien Species Information Network (EASIN) was presented in the session “Alien species ecological impacts: from genomics to macroecology”, acknowledging the impact of alien species on freshwater ecosystems. EASIN provides updated aggregated scientific information on invasive alien species (IAS) in Europe from a network of partners, supporting EU Member States early warning and rapid response to IAS of Union concern, while implementing EU Regulation 1143/2014. The participants to the special session showed particular interest in EASIN planned activities concerning Citizen Science, including the already developed Smartphone application for reporting IAS of Union concern throughout Europe.
