What is the origin of the European marine non-indigenous species?
A new study of European Alien Species Information Network (EASIN) identifies the origin (native distribution range) of the marine non-indigenous species established across the European Seas (824 species), and the primary pathway of their introduction, based on the data of the EASIN.
The vast majority of the marine non-indigenous species originate from the Western and Central Indo-Pacific, in particular for species introduced in the Eastern Mediterranean.
A significant number of species originate from the Temperate Northern Pacific, NE Atlantic and Tropical Atlantic, in particular for species introduced in the Black Sea, Great North Sea and Western Mediterranean.
Time trends reveal a general decrease in species introductions originating from the Temperate Northern Pacific.
The assessment of the origin and the associated pathways of the marine non-indigenous species can support tailored management of specific pathways per marine European region, focusing to prioritization efforts.
