JRC and the COST Association jointly organized a Workshop on “Citizen Science and Open Data: a model for Invasive Alien Species in Europe”, held in Brussels on 8 February.
The workshop, which had a focus on Invasive Alien Species, aimed at identifying:
methods to recognize Citizen Scientists as stakeholders in policy making, especially how to use currently available data from Citizen Science initiatives in environmental policy, supporting the implementation of the EU Regulation on IAS;
best practices for engaging citizens in collecting and sharing data;
technical constraints and solutions for data sharing, management and communication to the relevant authorities.
The workshop was attended by 50 participants, and enjoyed the presence of Dr Ángeles Rodríguez-Peña, President of the COST Association, and of two Members of the European Parliament: Mr. R.S. Santos and Mr. P. Poc.
A friendly atmosphere enabled a fruitful discussion and networking. EASIN Team actively contributed by means of a speech on EASIN information system and planned activities on Citizen Science, and updates on the Smart App "Invasive Alien Species Europe" to report sightings of IAS of Union concern. The outcome of the workshop will soon be published in a relevant journal.
