Is this species considered as alien in Ireland? What is its status in that country? Thank you

In Europe, the species is considered introduced in ancient times in some Mediterranean islands (Sarà 1998). The species is native in Ireland (but some past introductions in the country are reported by Long 2003).

Is this not possibly linked to the fact that Ireland is a rabies free country and the inclusion of fox is aimed at preventing introduction from other countries?
