Thread Opening Text: Should the name Persicaria wallichii be changed to Koenigia polystachya (Wallich ex Meisner) T.M. Schuster & Reveal? https://gd.eppo.int/taxon/POLPS

The nomenclature for this species is quite complicated. However the name Persicaria wallichii should be replaced although in The Plant List it is still given as an accepted name. According to the Euro+Med the valid name for this species is Rubrivena polystachya (Meisn.) M. Král and the names Persicaria wallichii Greuter & Burdet and Polygonym polystachyum Meisn. are suggested as homotypic synonyms. In APG IV (https://www.mobot.org/MOBOT/research/APweb/genera/polygonaceaegen.html ) Rubrivena is given as a synonym of Koenigia. Koenigia polystachya (Wall. ex Meisn.) T.M.Schust. & Reveal is the accepted name in the following dbases: Plants of the World online http://www.plantsoftheworldonline.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:77152610-1#synonyms Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) https://www.gbif.org/species/8848208 EPPO (European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization) https://gd.eppo.int/taxon/POLPS In the Caryophyllales database (http://caryophyllales.org/cdm_dataportal/taxon/a6675475-5524-4a5a-a326-4647ebe1d636) the name Rubrivena is accepted with the following comment: A monotypic genus distributed in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and China (Qaiser 2001). The taxonomy of Rubrivena is complex; its members have been included in Polygonum (P. polystachyum; Li & al. 2003) and Persicaria (P. wallichii; Freeman 2005) and both names are accepted by Tropicos (undated). However, based on molecular studies, the placement of Rubrivena is strongly supported as sister to Aconogonon and Koenigia (Sanchez & al. 2011). For this reason we suggest to keep Rubrivena polystachya as the valid name for this species having Persicaria wallichii and Koenigia polystachya as synonyms Ioannis Bazos and Andreas Zikos
