Thread Opening Text: Hello, Reviewing horizon scanning articles for present emerging or future potential IAS, the species Alexandrium catenella was listed (in: Carboneras, C., Genovesi, P., Vila, M. et al. (2018) A prioritised list of invasive alien species to assist the effective implementation of EU legislation. Journal of Applied Ecology 55). Is it a synonym of Alexandrium acatenella? If not, should it be added to the Catalogue?
Kostas Tsiamis 10/7/2021 - 9:11 AM
Alexandrium catenella is distinct from A. acatenella. A. catanella status is obscure, as it happens for all phytoplankton species in Europe. The species is included in Aquanis base, but with a remark "cosmopolitan". Based on Gomez 2008 the species should be considered as native in Europe. I would be reluctant to include the species in the EASIN Catalogue.

Thank you.
