Thread Opening Text: In which European countries Acer platanoides is native?
Ioannis BAZOS 7/15/2016 - 3:13 PM
According to Flora Europaea (vol 2 p 238 Tutin et al. 1968) the species is native in most of Europe except the extreme North, the extreme west and the islands. It’s planted for ornament and occasionally naturalized. Native range: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, former Czechoslovakia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, former Yugoslavia, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and Turkey in Europe Naturalized in Great Britain and The Netherlands. According to the Flora of Turkey and the East Aegean Islands (Davis 1967: vol 2, p 509) the species is native in most of Europe (except the extreme N and S), Caucasia, N. Iran. Also in Turkey (Turkey in Europe and Anatolia). According to the Med Checklist (Greuter et al 1984: vol 1) it is native in Spain, France, Italy, former Yugoslavia, Albania, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. It is also given as P (problematic) for Portugal (which means that it is doubtfully naturalized there). According to Boratynski et al (Chorology of trees and shrubs in Greece, 1992), Acer platanoides is a Holarctic element from the European group of species growing also in SW Asia. In Europe it is given as native in Albania, Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, Spain, Hungary, Italy, former Yugoslavia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine. According to DAISIE Belgium – Alien (established), Corsica – Alien (established) Not given in Med-Checklist, United Kingdom – Alien (established), Ireland – Alien (established), Latvia – Alien (established), Netherlands – Alien (established), Portugal – Alien (not established), Spain – Alien (established) http://www.europe-aliens.org/speciesFactsheet.do?speciesId=17106 Though recorded in DAISIE as alien in Belgium, Acer platanoides is not included in the alien plants of Belgium database (http://alienplantsbelgium.be/) NOBANIS Finland – unknown status, Netherlands – established https://www.nobanis.org/species-info/?taxaId=8504 Check CABI for more information on the native distribution of the species in Europe http://www.cabi.org/isc/datasheet/2883 It seems that Acer platanoides is partly native in Spain (for more information check Flora Iberica http://www.floraiberica.es/floraiberica/texto/pdfs/09_113_01_Acer.pdf ) and France where according to DAISIE it is considered alien in Corsica Ioannis Bazos & Andreas Zikos
