Pasche et al. 2016 starting from previous studies result, after isolation, pathogenicity tests , DNA sequencing, morphological and phylogenetic analysis came to the conclusion that Gnomoniopsis smithogilvyi, Gnomoniopsis sp and Gnomoniopsis castanea are very closed related and appeared to belong to the species G. smithogilvyi, which name should therefore be favored. Since Phomopsis castanea, reclassified as Gnomonia pascoe, was lately studied by Shuttleworth et al. 2013, establishing that it belongs to one species, G. smithogilvyi together with G. castanea, should we modify EASIN Catalogue which reports Cryptodiaporthe castanea (sin. P. castanea)? Reference:https://www.researchgate.net/deref/http%3A%2F%2Fdx.doi.org%2F10.1016%2Fj.fgb.2016.01.002

My quick reply and suggestion is to remove Cryptodiaporthe castanea from the EASIN database. I agree on the fact that this species is recognised as the telomorph of Phomopsis castanea and thus a synonim of Gnomoniopsis castanea .....or smithogylvyi. However there are no evidences of this species to be alien to Europe. Personally I think it is not....and that the outbreak of nut rot by G. castanea (syn G. smithogylvyi) in the last 10 years was a consequence of gall wasp infestation.
