Thread Opening Text: Question: are the Med records of Abudefduf vaigiensis sure? It seems to me that it is another case of "questionable" matter, but it should be solved by a taxonomical expert on fishes. In fact, early Mediterranean records (including also Israelian ones?) of this species may be also ascribed to A. saxatilis, that has naturally entered the Mediterranean via Gibraltar? They look like very similar, and may be only molecular on the recorded specimens may solve it....

Prof Golani claims that the Israeli records are for certain A. vagainsis. The Italian record though (Tardent, P., 1959. Capture d'un Abudefduf saxatilis vaigiensis Q. und G. (Pisces, Pomacentridae) dans le Golfe de Naples. Revue Suisse de Zoologie, 66: 347-351) is most probably A. saxatilis ans as such has been excluded in our last update. The Israeli, Lebanese (2012) and Greek (2013) records fit well with the lessepsian pathway pattern.
