Asterias rubens appears as alien in the European Atlantic coasts, where it is native. This needs to be corrected in the EASIN Catalogue.

Indeed Asterias rubens is native in the Atlantic. However, it appears to be introduced in the Sea of Marmara (Albayrak, 1996; Yuce & Sadler, 2000)and the Black Sea(Turkish coast: Kahran et al 2007) Mortensen 1927, reported that it is found accidentally in the Mediterranean but did not specify a locality. The suggestion that A. rubens was introduced by shipping (Zibrowius, 2002) is reasonable. Its planktotrophic larvae may have tranfered in ballast waters on ships.
