Biological control of Azolla filiculoides by means of a weevil

Stenopelmus rufinasus, a small north American weevil, is a specific effective natural enemy of Azolla filiculoides in its native area. 

The weevil, can only feed and reproduce on Azolla, and has proven to be an effective biological control agent in laboratory and field trials in South Africa as well as in the UK, where recently helped in restoring choking waterways.
